Johannesburg with its fast lanes and non-stop vibe soon shifts as you turn away from the N12 to travel past Fochville. The 90 kilometre drive is quickly forgotten and the hustle of a busy city left behind as you turn right onto a perfectly kept dirt road at the foothills of Losberg.
The fast pace suddenly becomes a slow drive as you enter the welcoming main gates of the Losberg Lodge where a wire cross stands tall, indicative of the kind of people you are about the meet.
The morning air is fresh with a slight breeze moving through the leaves of the Akasia trees, brushing over grassy fields on both sides. Scanning the quiet terrain, you spot the zebra grazing with a group of springbok and impala.
For a moment you’re lost in the tranquillity as you climb out of your vehicle to feel the ground under your feet, inhaling the scenic beauty at the foot of Losberg elevating approximately 1 750 meters high on the horizon not far out. But not for long. The main gate of the lodge is still a few hundred meters away. Climbing back into your vehicle, the wire hearts alongside the road catches your attention. Perfectly placed to be florally decorated showing the way for the next wedding’s guests.
The dirt road is surprisingly smooth and moments before you reach the lodge, a giraffe casually strolls through the veld. Another stop … another photo opportunity.
Entering the lodge area, an oasis of lush green lawns and rows of palm trees reaching high into the sky frames the buildings and play area beyond the shaded parking areas for guests.
Today is a normal working day, with friendly staff watering the lush gardens, trimming the lawns, getting the rooms and honeymoon suite ready for the soon to arrive wedding party wanting to setup and decorate the main hall for tomorrow’s ceremony.
A young energetic lodge manager greets us, and we soon know that Losberg Lodge is more than just a function venue. As he tells his stories, while showing us around, it is evident that the love for people and the love for wildlife balances out equally.
It is almost as if you were there when the last corporate training and executive event was hosted. Tasting the well-prepared food made with the smallest attention to detail.
The children’s playground echoes of laughter from every child that ever visited. And today they meticulously make sure that every piece of playground equipment is safe and beautifully kept for the children that would safely run around during tomorrow’s event.
While today’s visit is a short formal one, the large swimming pool looks fresh and inviting. A summer holiday in the making.
In a moment of reflective excitement, our young Lodge manager tells us about the mountain bike and hiking trails they are busy planning out. Such fun. Adventures to look forward to. In the freedom of nature, where, perhaps, you’ll walk with the wildlife. After all the farm is home to more than the springbok, impala, zebra and giraffe we saw coming in. There are also eland, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest and blesbok.
